Lucas Ruggieri: The Dragon
Lucas' piece is ink on a 10.5 x 10.5 inch illustration board. It comes matted in a black wood frame whose outer dimensions are 14 inches by 14 inches.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Lucas Ruggieri received his BFA in illustration from the Savanna College of Art and Design. Lucas' work mostly focuses on the use of pen and ink constructing narratives saturated in historical and contemporary subject matter. His illustrations examine our most dismal societal realities, asserting our views of the human condition and our own mortality constantly in question.
Centered around aesthetic and conceptual intricacy, Lucas’ work spans a wide range of media, focusing on the use of pen and ink, as well as various etching and printmaking techniques. Through his manipulation of our most traditional modes of artistic production, Lucas constructs both pictorial and contextual narratives saturated in historical and contemporary subject matter. While his work is strongly grounded in the pictorial traditions of artists such as Albrecht Durer and Gustave Doré, his aphotic delineations examine our most dismal societal realities, contending our ideas of the human condition, our own mortality constantly in question. His labyrinthine illustrations defy spatial and proportional conventions; depictions of anthropomorphic creatures and cadaverous figures are amongst the many inhabitants of his behemothic yet contemplative landscapes.
Lucas’ work has been exhibited and sold, throughout The United States, as well as Europe, Africa, and Australia. His opportunities working for bands such as Kylesa, Cough, and Black Tusk, continue to further his desire to re-engage the realm of modern illustration with antiquarian practices.
