212 Arts is pleased to present a solo exhibition of the work of Jay Shells, featuring 60 brand new water color paintings. You may know Jason Shelowitz (Jay Shells) for his Subway Etiquette campaign, Metropolitan Etiquette Authority projects, or his multi-city, ongoing Rap Quotes campaign or you may not know him at all. No matter your relationship to this artist, you most certainly don’t know him for his watercolor work as they have never been exhibited. These watercolors began in late 2016 as studies for his body of pyrography (wood burning) work, and quickly took on a life of their own. They are a celebration of the overlooked infrastructure and fading details of New York. Portraits of sticker-covered mailboxes, peeling paint, fading street signs and otherwise mundane details that most ignore in their daily life. But to the graffiti artists, sticker enthusiasts and urban explorers, these are the details that reveal the true character of a city.
